What to Expect During Counselling Sessions

A good rapport and trusting relationship are where the therapy and the treatment process begins. In therapy or counselling, we need to be able to connect with each other and that starts with building a foundation of trust. As psychologists in the Edmonton area, our aim is to create a comfortable atmosphere in your therapy sessions and to allow you to be yourself, share what you want to share, and not push you into anything you don’t want to talk about.

Ultimately, it’s your choice and your time. We are here as a resource to help you deal with whatever is negatively affecting your life; whether that may be associated with depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), ADHD, bipolar disorder or problems in a relationship. With our experience and knowledge as registered psychologists, we can get to the roots of your mental health struggles and build strategies to manage unproductive symptoms together. If you feel you could be experiencing any of these mental health problems, we can work together to find solutions.

As psychologists in Edmonton, our treatment starts with you. There is no pressure to commit and if you feel counselling or therapy is the avenue to improving your life, please contact our office for a free phone consultation and we’ll go from there. How do I know I need a psychologist's help?

Are you constantly worrying about a loved one, yourself, your job, or simply spending too much time thinking about negative outcomes in your life? Does your mind seem to race or struggle to slow down? These can be signs and symptoms of mental health problems such as anxiety or ADHD.

Is it tough to focus on a certain task, whether it is a simple daily chore, a conversation between friends and family, or a job at work? Negative overriding thoughts and emotions impacting your mental health may be to blame for this. As Edmonton psychologists, we can help as well as to provide a safe place to talk about why these thoughts are interfering with your life.

Do you find your moods shifting, extremely happy one moment, angry, irritable, or depressed not too long after? As trusted and registered psychologists in Edmonton, we are here to help get to the bottom of why you have these constant mood swings. These types of changes in mood are common in mental health issues related to Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. There is help and it starts with a simple discussion and conversation.

The feeling of utter sadness and helplessness can be overwhelming and can destroy relationships and make day-to-day life a major struggle. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There is a reason you feel this way and it stems from thoughts, experiences, and how you cope with them. These are often thoughts and feelings associated with depression and PTSD. With our expertise and your willingness to achieve positive change, we can help begin the treatment process of discovering why you feel sad or helpless in the first place.

Alcohol and drugs often become a coping strategy for those struggling with mental health problems. They become a great way to numb and avoid thoughts and emotions. They may seem like a solution, but ultimately, they are not and they may create even more issues. Change starts with a simple conversation, understanding what led to using drugs and alcohol followed by developing healthier coping strategies within counselling. Inside the friendly confines of our Edmonton office, we can discuss the best ways to help you through your struggles.

Frequently Asked Questions to Our Edmonton Psychologists

How do I choose the right Psychologist to help me?

Psychologists and clients work together. The right match is important. Most psychologists agree that an important factor in determining whether or not to work with a particular psychologist, once that psychologist’s credentials and competence are established, is your level of personal comfort and ability to connect with that psychologist. A good rapport with your psychologist is critical. Choose one with whom you feel comfortable and at ease.

What does a Psychologist do?

A psychologist studies how we think, feel and behave from a scientific viewpoint and applies this knowledge to help people understand, explain and change their behaviour through therapy.

What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

The main difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is the training. A psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor who has gone on to specialize in psychiatry and mental health disorders. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications as well. The cost of services by a psychiatrist is covered by provincial health care.

Psychologists do not have to train as medical doctors in order to be licensed. In Alberta, psychologists must have at least a master’s degree in psychology. Furthermore, psychologists cannot prescribe medications. In Edmonton, Registered Psychologists are licensed by and professionally and ethically regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists. The cost of services provided by a Registered Psychologist is typically not covered by our provincial health care.

Are counselling sessions with a psychologist confidential?

All Edmonton counselling and therapy sessions are confidential, except for a few limits which we are legally bound to follow. Limits to confidentiality generally involve a court order that would require us as your psychologist to provide information for legal proceedings. Other limits included are if a client or someone else poses an immediate danger to themselves or another person, or if there is a potential of abuse/neglect towards any minor person. Any limits to confidentiality will be fully discussed in our first therapy session, which is also outlined in our consent document.

What are your policies around cancellations and missed appointments?

Our Edmonton office requires a prior 24 hours notice to cancel an appointment. Cancellations under 24 hours and/or missed appointments will be billed at our hourly rate.

How do I know if I need therapy from a psychologist?

If you feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of helplessness and sadness, and your problems do not seem to get better despite your efforts and help from family and friends then therapy is likely for you. If you find it difficult to carry out everyday activities, such as:

  • Concentrating on assignments at work and your job performance is suffering as a result
  • If you worry excessively, expect the worst, or are constantly on edge
  • If your actions are harmful to yourself or to others: for instance, you are drinking too much alcohol, abusing drugs, or becoming overly argumentative and aggressive

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you might require the services of a registered psychologist.

When will my therapy with my psychologist be complete?

On average, most people will attend 6-12 counselling sessions before ending therapy. Some individuals find that just one therapy session can create significant change in their lives. Each person who comes for counselling or therapy will be different in terms of their needs and what benefit they get from therapy. For some people, the number of therapy sessions may be lower or higher. We will never tell you that you can no longer come for treatment. We realize that from time to time individuals want to come in a year or two later for a booster therapy session. If you are interested or require more information about therapy services with a registered psychologist, contact us at any time.
